What is FASD?

A Lifelong Condition

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong condition caused when a developing baby is exposed to alcohol during pregnancy.

Alcohol passes from the mother’s bloodstream to the fetus, which cannot process it the way an adult can. This disrupts brain development and can affect other organs.

The result is a spectrum of challenges, ranging from mild to severe, depending on how much alcohol was consumed and when during pregnancy.

Why FASD is Called the “Invisible Disability”

FASD is often called an invisible disability because most people with it show no physical differences.

Only a small percentage have facial features linked to prenatal alcohol exposure. This invisibility leads to misunderstandings, as teachers, employers, or family may mistake struggles for laziness or defiance. In reality, these are neurological challenges resulting in compromised executive functioning skills.

Because it is often unseen, FASD can result in stigma, misdiagnosis, and lack of support. Many are labeled with ADHD or behavioral issues without recognition of the root cause.

Challenges People with FASD Face

A major challenge for individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is impaired executive functioning. Because the frontal lobe is affected, skills such as memory, organization, and money management are often limited.

These difficulties impact daily life in significant ways. Trouble remembering dates can lead to missed appointments or interviews. Difficulty prioritizing tasks can make individuals appear disorganized, while the abstract nature of credit cards can lead to financial problems. As a result, only about 20 percent of adults with FASD are able to live independently.

Impulse control and connecting actions to consequences are especially challenging. In school, children with FASD are frequently labeled as “defiant” and may spend more time in the principal’s office than in the classroom, falling behind academically.

They are often excluded from activities when teachers and coaches struggle to manage their behaviors. Families, too, can feel isolated as they navigate complex medical and mental-health systems in search of support.

Thriving with the Right Support

While FASD lasts a lifetime, people with it also have unique strengths. With patience, structure, and community support, they can not only succeed but thrive.
